Dusk on the Smith Island DockDusk on the Smith Island Dock
Smith Island is actually several islands in Somerset County,MD are predominately low areas of salt marsh typically no more than 4 feet above sea level. these islands are rapidly disappearing, and in another 50 years it is highly unlikely that they will continue to exist. Over 3300 acres of land on the islands have been lost to erosion and rising sea levels over the past 150 years. This coupled with an aging and dwindling population, makes it highly likely that life as we presently know it on Smith Island is likely to disappear later in this century.
